If you really want to dive into the topic of All Things AI, I'd highly encourage you to start with self-rolling into AI Essentials for Healthcare Educators. This course is an initial step in learning and applying the basic knowledge of what AI is and how to use it as an instructional support tool.

Institutionally "Approved" tools.

UNMC-approved AI tools are Zoom AI Companion, Microsoft Copilot, and Adobe Firefly. You should use your UNMC credentials to log into these tools and are encouraged to explore the features and functions applicable to your work tasks.

Zoom:

Take a few minutes to scan through Zoom's report on Solving the collaboration paradox: Survey shows how teams can save time with AI.

I use the Zoom AI Companion feature in every meeting I host. I do this by turning on every setting feature I can. By visiting https://unmc.zoom.us/ and logging into your account, you can see a left-hand menu called "Settings". Within Settings, there is an AI Companion tab. Click this to view and adjust any settings you wish. There are help bubbles to click on that will further detail each setting. Turn things on (or off), then start a Zoom meeting on your own to test the features out! With a bit of trial and error, you'll be working with Zoom more efficiently in no time.

Note: There are a few that are disabled by our system administrator due to information security reasons.

If you are the host, use Zoom AI companion to automatically take notes for you! In the meeting toolbar, simply click "AI Companion" button to start this functionality. After the meeting is over, and everyone quits Zoom, the AI Companion will generate a summary of the converted spoken audio into text. All meeting "Summaries" can be found in the web version of your Zoom account in its left-hand navigation. You can click a "share" button or copy and paste to further edit as needed in any other software i.e., Word or email.

Copilot:

Try it out! Search in your browser for "Copliot" or directly here. YES - sign in with your UNMC credentials! This is highly suggested and results in your chat process being protected by enterprise-level security features.

The free version allows you to prompt and provides results based on freely available internet data and information. It's more than a glorified search engine. It is a "reasoning engine" that you can ask and elaborate through interactive prompts to get more finite results.

Log in and give it a try! Just type a prompt into the text box and see where it goes. Here are a few samples. Just swap out my italic text with your own.

1. "Help me rewrite these Canvas course assignment instructions so they are clear and concise, use Bloom's Taxonomy higher-order verbs, and clearly include formatting and submission guidelines." [copy/paste your instructions].

2. "Help me build out a slide deck for my presentation at our [College of Dentistry All-College Conference on Friday, August 22nd, at the East Campus Union, in the Great Plains Room (2nd Floor)]. Here are some further details to help. The presentation will be 50 minutes on [Practical uses of AI to all students, staff, and faculty on practical uses of AI for daily functions, teaching better, learning better etc. Institutionally approved AI tools that UNMC allows would be helpful. Additionally, online free tools that are not institutionally approved, but can be accessed via personal accounts, can be an added bonus, such as Gamma AI or HeyGen]."

3. "Analyze my current skills and identify any gaps that I need to fill to advance in my career."

Adobe Firefly:

Khanmigo Teacher Tools:

A new AI tool called Khanmigo Teacher Tools is now available and enabled within Canvas.

The same non-profit that created Khan Academy has partnered with Microsoft to produce Khanmigo, which is built for educators. Khanmigo is an AI-powered tutor and teaching assistant designed to provide personalized, interactive learning experiences and support teachers with various tasks.

Training and tutorials are available online for faculty and staff via a self-paced Canvas course. Enrollment in the training is available at this link; the course is estimated to take 20 to 30 minutes to complete.

Khanmigo Teacher Tools is free for all U.S.-based K-12 and higher education educators as part of the med center’s Canvas subscription. This Canvas integration is meant to streamline and accelerate time-consuming tasks:

Teaching assistant: Khanmigo can assist with generative AI tools to complete such tasks as lesson planning, creating rubrics and providing feedback.
Streamlined workload: It can help teachers manage their workload more efficiently by automating routine tasks and providing instant help.
Differentiated instruction: It offers help so teachers can personalize student assignments and generate fresh lesson ideas.
Content creation: Khanmigo can generate closing or exit ticket questions, warm-up activities and more.
